Our Story

how we met

Scharl was invited by a mutual friend to Dana's housewarming party. In his tiny 250 sqft. apartment where 30 people were having a great time she managed to stand out. After a while, Dana got brave and approached her. A long conversation about some of Dana's artwork ensued, and a few tipples later, he managed to snag her number. Being the incredible host he was, he promptly fell asleep while the party continued on through the early morning hours. Scharl somehow responded to his call the next day...and the rest is history!

the proposal

We had been dating long distance for two years - Scharl in Seoul; Dana in Seattle. One day, Dana was enjoying the breeze on his hammock and thought, "Gosh, I wish Scharl was here". Dana secretly bought a ring and prepared a birthday trip for Scharl to Chuncheon, where they had taken their first excursion out of Seoul. He proposed on the bank of a stream next to some random apartment buildings and Scharl burst into tears, forgetting to say 'yes'! Luckily, she was able to find her words a few moments later...

our american wedding

We had our American wedding at Dana's parents' home in the Blooming Grove Fishing & Hunting Club in Hawley, Pennsylvania, USA. It was the best day of our lives.

and all the rest...

Eight months later, COVID happened. Our lockdown together in Seattle was difficult at times, but made us stronger as a couple. Scharl grew her career with a new job in corporate sustainability. And Dana continues to work at Microsoft.

After Korea's COVID travel restrictions were lifted, our Korean wedding, which had initially been planned soon after our American one, finally became an option. We only had to cancel three times! Now, at a new venue, we look forward to again welcoming our friends and family. This time we'll all meet on the other side of the world, for a renewal of our vows...
